Troubleshooting: Setting Up Mylio On a Replacement Computer or a Fresh Install

Mylio is designed to keep all of your devices in sync, and thus contains a catalog which is constantly updated when Mylio is open and running. Because of this, restoring Mylio after a fresh operating system install, or restoring Mylio from Time Machine, will not work as it may contain an older catalog. Restoring Mylio manually or from Time Machine may cause unexpected issues, such as catalog corruption or file mismatches.

If you have a new computer, are reinstalling your operating system, or performing a clean install of your operating system, there are three possible ways to restore Mylio outside of starting over completely.

  Note:  iOS and Android devices can only be re-setup by using the “Resync photos from a device that holds Originals” option.

Resync Photos from a Device that Holds Originals

This option is best used if you have a new machine or fresh OS that does not contain any of your photos.  Mylio can easily be restored on a new machine or fresh OS by syncing from a device that holds Originals. This includes external drives or a NAS that has been set up as Mylio device, or another machine that has Originals.

To properly set Mylio backup, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure you have a device that currently has Originals.
  2. Make sure that Mylio is not currently set up on the new/clean machine by clearing application support data.
  3. When launching, you will be prompted to sign back in. If you are given an error stating you have hit your device limit, you can remove devices that are no longer in use from the account details page.
  4. Sign in to your Mylio account.
  5. Do not import any photos on first run.
  6. Ensure the new machine has a device Sync Policy of Originals.
  7. Connect the new machine to another device that has Originals by connecting to the same wi-fi network, or plug in a USB drive that is set up as a Mylio device and properly formatted.
  8. Mylio will begin to sync and reload Originals as expected.

Perform a Catalog Recovery

If you have performed a reinstall or fresh OS install on your machine and manually migrated your data to your new machine then a catalog recovery may help you get back up and running with Mylio quickly.

  Note:  catalog recovery cannot be performed against a NAS when the host computer is the devices that needs to be recovered. Additionally, USB drives cannot be used directly for recovery and must be connected to a separate machine running Mylio.

When performing a catalog recovery, the new machine should have all previously imported photos as Originals in the same file structure, hierarchy and location as they were in previously. For instance, if all of your photos were in your “Pictures” folder before the reinstall, then all photos will need to be in the “Pictures” folder after the reinstall. This option also only works if you have not already signed into Mylio on the new machine. If you have signed in already, please see “Manually relink photos from downloaded catalog”.

  1. Open the Mylio application and type in your user email and password.
  2. Before clicking Sign In, begin holding the Option key on Mac or the Alt key on Windows on your keyboard. With the key held, click Sign In.
  3. Continue to hold the Option or Alt key while selecting closing out of the What’s New dialog if there is one.
  4. Mylio will ask if you want to restore the device or setup as a new device. Select that you would like to restore the device.
  5. The catalog process will run automatically. If no device is found, Mylio will attempt to download a catalog from the cloud. If no catalog is found, Mylio will alert you and ask you to connect another device via wifi to sync the catalog from.

In some cases, Mylio may not be able to automatically relink all of the folders. In these cases, you can manually relink these files by:

  1. Open Mylio and locate a folder that says Missing on it. If this is a subfolder, ensure the parent folder does not say Missing. If it does, use the parent folder instead of the subfolder.
  2. Once you have located the topmost Missing folder, right-click on it and select Locate Missing Folder.
  3. Mylio gives you two options:
    1. Relink – Select a folder on your internal drive that contains all of the media of the missing folder
      1. If using relink, it is important that the folder you are selecting is the exact same folder as Mylio is listing. If you selected ‘Locate Missing Folder’ on a folder named 2015 with 100 media, you must relink to a folder named 2015 with 100 media.
    2. Sync – Download all originals from an online device that has originals
  4. Once the missing folder is located, Mylio will scan the folder and match the media back to the catalog.

Manually Relink Photos from Downloaded Catalog

If you have photos on your computer and have opened Mylio only to find blank black squares in your library, then manually relinking your folders may be the best option.For this option to work properly your media in Finder or File Explorer must match what is inside of Mylio. Different file structures or hierarchies means Mylio can’t match your catalog and library and you will need to start Mylio over.

This option assumes that you:

  1. Have all of your photos on your machine in folders that were once in Mylio.
  2. You have signed into Mylio and have blank black squares or Thumbnails/Previews only.
  3. The file count at the top of the Navigation panel is your full file count. If this number is too low, please allow Mylio more time to download the catalog from the cloud.

Once these three criteria have been met, you can begin to manually relink your folders:

  1. Close Mylio
  2. Navigate to your user folder and locate the Mylio folder.
      Note:  if you set a different library location than the default, please navigate to the “Mylio” folder in that location.
  3. Open the Mylio folder. You will see a list of all of the folders you had previously loaded into Mylio. If you only see Mylio Pictures then open Mylio and confirm that only Mylio Pictures is listed as your top-most level folder, then close Mylio again.
  4. Delete all folders listed in Mylio except for the Generated Images Bundle. Do not empty the trash (just in case!).
  5. Once delete, open Mylio. You will see Mylio display Missing on all folders that have been deleted.
  6. Right-click on one of these folders and select Locate Missing Folder, then Relink.
  7. Mylio allows you to select the location of the folder that holds the images. It is important that the folder you are selecting is the exact same folder as Mylio is listing. If you selected Locate Missing Folder on a folder named 2015 with 100 media, you must relink to a folder named 2015 with 100 media.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all missing folders.
