Importing Photos from the Picasa Application

This article will walk you through exporting your images from the Picasa application while preserving as much of your current organization, edits, and metadata as possible. If you have transitioned to Google Photos or do not use the Picasa application, you may wish to import with Mylio’s Picasa / Google Photos Import Tool. There are two distinct ways of exporting your images from Picasa, both with their own advantages and disadvantages. Both methods will preserve the following information…

  • Tags – imported into Mylio as Keywords
  • Caption – imported into Mylio as Caption
  • Location – imported into Mylio as Places
  • Face Tags – imported into Mylio as “People” (See: Preserving Face Tagging within this article)

When deciding on which import option is best for you, the main differentiator is whether you wish to permanently retain edits to your photos or discard all edits you have made.

Import images from Finder / File Explorer (discard edits)

Edits in Picasa are stored as proprietary files that other applications cannot read. By importing your photos directly from Finder or File Explorer you can import the original image directly into Mylio. This file will not include edits you have made previously.

  1. Open Picasa and display the left navigation panel
  2. Locate the list of folders you have in Picasa
  3. To view the location of this folder, right click on the folder (control+click on Mac) and select “Show in Finder / File Explorer”.
  4. Picasa will display the location of this folder. If all folders in Picasa are stored inside one parent folder, take note of the location of the parent folder. Otherwise, take note of the location of this specific folder.
  5. Open Mylio and select ‘Import’ from the Navigation Panel.
  6. You have two distinct import options…
    1. Copy – this option will duplicate all selected file and folders into the Mylio Library.
    2. Import Source Folders – this option allows you to have Mylio watch folder(s) in their original location. Deleting or moving a file will affect the original file.
  7. Once your import option has been selected, choose the parent folder of all of your images or the specific folder you would like to import.
  8. If you are importing a specific folder and not a parent folder of all images, repeat steps 1-7 for each folder you have in Picasa, using the same import command each time.

Once finished, all of your images will be viewable and editable in Mylio with tags (keywords), captions, Places, and people viewable in the Details Panel.

Export Images from Picasa to Mylio (retain edits permanently)

If you would like to retain all of your edits in Picasa you can do so by exporting your images into Mylio. This process will “bake in” your edits to your photo, making them permanent. You will not be able to alter or remove the current edits to your photo, but your edits will be viewable in and outside of Mylio. When following these steps, please be sure to already have Mylio installed on your computer.

Note: these steps require that you have enough space on your machine to duplicate all Picasa photos.

These steps can also be used to export just specific albums or people to Mylio. Simply select the desired album/person in step 2, instead of a folder.

  1. Open Picasa and display the left hand navigation panel
  2. Locate the list of folders you have in Picasa
  3. Select the top folder you would like to export to Mylio. Note that each folder must be exported individually.
  4. With the folder selected, press Command+a (Mac) or Control+a (Windows) to select all photos in that folder
  5. Navigate to and select “Export” at the bottom of PicasaExport from Picasa
  6. In the “Export location” field select “Browse…” and locate the Mylio Library folder. This is in your user folder by default and simply called “Mylio”.
  7. Open the Mylio Library folder and open the “Mylio Pictures” folder within it. Choose this location to export your photos.
  8. Once confirmed, ensure that the “Name of exported folder” field in Picasa matches the folder you are exporting.
  9. Set “Image Size” to “Use original size”
  10. Set “Image quality” to “automatic”
  11. Select “Export”
  12. Picasa will export all selected photos into the Mylio Pictures folder. Once exported, the photos will be viewable in Mylio automatically with edits and transferrable metadata.

Preserving Face Tagging

If you have face tagged your photos in Picasa and wish for that information to be available in Mylio, you must tell Picasa to store this information in the image itself. To do this…

  1. Open Picasa and open Picasa preferences from the Picasa > Preferences menu on Mac or Edit > Preferences on Windows.
  2. Navigate to the “Name Tags” tab.
  3. Check “Store name tags in photos”.
  4. Navigate to the “Tools” menu and then “Experimental”
  5. Select “Write faces to XMP…”
  6. Picasa warns that this action may take a long time. When ready, select “Write All”

Picasa will now store all tagged faces into your photo’s metadata. When importing into Mylio this information will be available.
