Here’s What the Best of 50,000 Photos from 130 Countries Look Like

Winners of the Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA) were recently announced, chosen from a pool of 50,000 entrants from 130 countries, in the categories Storyboard (photo essay), Wine, Sport, Architecture, Wildlife, Nature, People & Portrait, Travel, Open Monochrome, Open Color, and Student. You can see galleries of top entrants in each category here, with a spotlight on the Grand Prize winner and Open Color category below.

The competition is produced by the non-profit Art Photo Travel, and is part of the month-long Siena Art Photo Travel Festival. In their own words:

Art Photo Travel creates cultural initiatives aimed at spreading, promoting and enhancing art, monuments, traditions, cultures and natural beauty from all around the world. Initiatives and projects address not only at those who love art and culture, but also to those interested in the most unknown and less touristy spots of various worldwide locations. An approach focus to mature awareness towards a culture mainly orientated to support the understanding of places, of populations and of people. Art Photo Travel holds every year an international photography contest, the Siena International Photo Awards, in order to set up a new opportunity to favor the gathering among people, photography lovers, art and culture enthusiasts. The Siena International Photo Awards is open to all photographers, professionals, enthusiasts and new talents from all around the world.

SIPA Contest Photo of the Year: Sardine Run (South Africa) by Greg Lecour. During the sardines’ migration along the coast of South Africa, all marine predators are looking for sardines! I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time to photograph their capture.

First Prize, Open Color Category: Phan Rang Fishing Net Making (Vietnam) by Danny Yen Sin Wong. In a small village in southern Vietnam near Phan Rang, a woman wearing a typical cone hat is creating a fishing net in their traditional manner. The manufacturing of handmade nets is still a typical Vietnamese activity for women which they carry on while their husbands are out fishing.

Second Prize: Makkah3 (Saudi Arabia) by Majid Alamri. A multitude of observant Muslims hold the traditional circumambulation ritual around the Kaaba, an ancient building located in the center of Mecca, which is the holiest place for the Islam community.

Third Prize: Central Black (Bahrain) by Isa Ebrahim. A Bahraini Muslim woman carrying her son while taking part in the funeral of Isa Radhi, the Bahraini protester who was allegedly killed during Martial Law in Sitra Village, South Manama on March 22, 2011.

Honorable Mention: Red Zone (Lijiang, China) by Herman Morrison. This photo was taken during Impression Lijiang, a magnificent outdoor singing and dancing performance demonstrating the traditions and lifestyle of the local ethnic group.

Honorable Mention: Typhoon (Shengshan, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province) by Changming Liu. The waves look like a volcanic eruption, like a giant tree eradicated and covering all the fragile buildings on the bank. The contrast between the waves and the building is representative of force and weakness, brightness and darkness, movement and stillness and conveys the idea of human weakness in the face of nature.

Honorable Mention: Outlines and Shadows (Vietnam) by Danny Yen Sin Wong. On the sand dunes of Mui Ne, situated close to its homonym city in South Vietnam, three girls are walking along the slope wearing their typical cone hats and carrying their scales, creating beautiful lines and shade effects on the sand.

Honorable Mention: Dry Fish (Sunderban) by K.M. Asad. Some fishermen return to their boats after collecting fish in their big baskets. In the Sunderban area, Bangladesh, where the shot was taken, fishing still represents one of the main resources for the local population.

Honorable Mention: Sisters in Desert (Naiman desert in Inner Mongolia, China) by Yushan Li. While the sunrise shines on the sand, in the desert of Naima, some Mongolian girls carry buckets on their way to get water. Their shadows are of rare beauty.

Honorable Mention: The Way Back (Annasiriya, Iraq) by Mohammed Sattar. The most beautiful area in the South of Iraq is called “Al-Chibayish Marshes” in Al-Nasiriyah province. It has hundreds of miles of water coming from the Euphrates river. In this area life is so simple and sometimes very hard.

Honorable Mention: Harvest Season (Bayinggolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Jing County and Bohu County of Xinjiang, China) by Hanbin Wang. October, the chilly harvest season, when the red chillies are mature, farmers pick them and leave them to dry in the hot sun. Once dry the chillies can easily be stored, transported and sold. This picture was taken from a unique aerial perspective, when the farmers were busy with the harvest.

Honorable Mention: Scaffolding Cafe (Turkey) by Leyla Emektar. While going to the beach to take photos, the shadow of some people in a cafe in Basiskele, Kocaeli, caught my attention. As a result, I decided to wait for the sunset in order to emphasize the shadow effect. After a few shots, someone suddenly looked out a window providing another interesting frame.

Honorable Mention: Diver and Guggenheim (Bilbao, Spain) by Ajuriaguerra Saiz Pedro Luis. The Czech diver, Navratil, makes a wonderful jump in Bilbao’s sky with the Guggenheim Museum showcased in the background, during the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.
